One of the greatest joys of being a parent can be found in teaching your children to read. There are as many angles to go about this as there are writing styles. But to truly give yourself to seeing the child learn the language proficiently can be a great joy.
When you sit down to consider the mere idea of how to teach reading, the task can seem overwhelming. But teaching children to read isn't nearly as complex as many would like to make it out to be. The biggest factor is the same as with anything that we want to learn well in life. You have to have repetition, and a lot of exposure.
Think about it simply. When you want to learn a song, what do you do? You play it over and over until it's ingrained in your head and mind without effort. When you want to teach a child to read, it's just a simple. Read. Read a whole lot.
Teaching a child how to read is an excellent chance for a parent or guardian to bond with a child. One of the most sure fire ways for them to learn is by you starting to read to them, daily, even multiple times a day. But don't just squat them in their little beds and hope they absorb it, get their attention and have them looking at the book with you.
This is where the real bonding happens, because not only will you be teaching them reading, but you'll be training them to sit still, pay attention, listen, and associate various ideas with the symbols on the page. When you're reading to them, even as toddlers, use your finger, or some form of guiding instrument to point at each word that you're speaking as you're speaking it. This act alone will play a major role in them learning the difficult language that is English.
Go nice and slowly. Take your time with difficult sounds and combined letters and so forth. Give their absorbent little brains plenty of opportunity to digest and process each and every little thing that you are doing and saying. Explain difficult words. Go over them again and again.
Use books that the child will grab on to, that will speak to their little world's and lives. Many children's books incorporate rhyme schemes and specialized content to help the child not only learn the meanings of words, phrases and so on, they'll learn the usage of phonics and how to have a good and proper command of the language.
It's important to remember that teaching a child to read is not just teaching them some random school subject, but you're teaching them how to handle words and communication. You're giving them tools that will help them effect and access the world around them. The more you pour into them and this fundamental and crucial stage, the more they'll be able to run ahead and use the power of communication to conquer the many challenges that will face them as they grow and move forward.
